How a visit works here

Three things that make a visit easier.

Comfort when you are nervous, no lectures about the past, and one office for the whole family.

A treatment room at Tonka Smiles with a navy dental chair.
01

Nobody has to be brave about it

For anyone who has put off the dentist because the last time went badly.

Nitrous oxide can be added to any appointment, and you can still drive yourself home. Oral sedation, a pill taken an hour before, keeps you awake but relaxed, with your pulse and blood pressure monitored. Dr. Phillips has completed the University of Minnesota's 80-hour sedation course. Sedation is for adults only.

02

No lectures about the past

For anyone worried about what the dentist will say.

“There is never any judgement on your oral hygiene history,” is how one patient put it, and the same point turns up again and again in reviews. Everything is explained before it happens, step by step, and you get the cost of a treatment plan ahead of time.

03

The whole family, in one place

For parents juggling three calendars and a toddler.

From around age three to patients in their 100s. A child’s first visit is just after their first birthday, short and gentle, with a parent close by. Sealants and Curodont, a drill-free treatment for early decay, keep small problems small.

Four things people ask about most.

Dental Implants

Dr. Phillips trained with the International Dental Implant Association and Implant Seminars, and on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic placed 20 implants. Oral sedation is available for the appointment.

Invisalign

Usually 18 to 30 sets of aligners, worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and most treatment runs 9 to 18 months. You see a 3D preview of the result first.

Boost Whitening

In the office, up to eight shades lighter in about an hour: three 20-minute applications. Or custom trays to whiten at home.

Curodont

Early decay treated with no drilling and no needles. A peptide gel helps the enamel rebuild itself, for children and adults alike.

Technology

Less drilling, less radiation.

Both doctors keep up with continuing education, study clubs and new equipment. What it buys you is simple: problems found sooner, and treated more gently.

  • Digital imagingUp to 80 to 90% less radiation than film, and on screen straight away.
  • Intraoral cameraYou see the tooth being discussed, enlarged, rather than taking it on trust.
  • Diode laserSoft-tissue gum therapy, gummy smile reshaping, tongue-ties, and cold and canker sores.
  • CurodontGuided enamel regeneration for early decay: no drill and no needle.

Common questions

What people ask before they book.

Home-care and post-op instructions, from extractions to whitening, come from the office after treatment, and the front desk is a phone call away.

Do you take my insurance?

We work with Delta Dental Premier, BCBS Federal Employee plans, HealthPartners and UnitedHealthcare, and we are in-network with a variety of other plans. We bill your insurance for you and give you cost information on a treatment plan ahead of time. Call with your plan details and the front desk will check.

I have not been to a dentist in years, and I am dreading it.

Tell us when you call. Nitrous oxide can be added to any appointment, wears off quickly, and you can drive yourself home. Dr. Phillips also offers oral sedation, a pill taken an hour before, with your pulse and blood pressure monitored. You stay awake but relaxed, and you will need a ride home. Sedation is offered to adults only.

Something has broken, or it hurts. Can I be seen today?

Call the office. We offer same-day emergency appointments whenever possible during office hours. Patients of record can call the same number, 952-938-8533, after hours. For severe facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911.

What happens at a first appointment?

A comprehensive exam, longer than a routine check-up. We measure gum pocket depths, take intraoral photos and any x-rays you need, screen for oral cancer and check your jaw, head and neck. Then the doctor sits down with you, goes through what was found and puts together a treatment plan. Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian with them.

When should my child first see a dentist?

Just after their first birthday. That first visit is short, with very little treatment. Around age three comes the first polish and hygiene appointment, and sealants help protect the back teeth as they come in.

How do I pay for larger treatment?

Payment is due at the time of service. We take cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. For larger treatment there is CareCredit, and Cherry, which has no hard credit check and 0% APR options. If you have no insurance and are 62 or over, you receive a 5% discount.

What if I need to cancel?

Please give us 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Missed appointments without that notice carry a $50 fee.
